Marketing (Not Monday): Doritos Crash the Superbowl 2014

Marketing Monday – when it’s not a Monday. Yikes.

Anywho, guess what’s coming up? The Superbowl! But what’s more exciting than that? The half-time advertisements! 🙂 My Consumer Behavior professor has been going on and on about making sure to catch the Superbowl, February 2nd, 5:30PM (Texas time). And this year a 30 second time slot is priced at $4 million!

I’m sure we all remember the unique Doritos commercials that previously aired because:

1) It’s created by a viewer like you! (and me) Doritos has what’s called the “Crash the Superbowl” ad competition where they get thousands of people to upload their own Doritos commercial and through votes the two finalists’ ads are shown at the Superbowl. What’s unique about this year is that they’ve opened the competition to consumers outside the U.S.

2) They are really well-made, very professional yet at extremely low cost compared to an actually ad agency making them!

3) Crowdsourcing. Basically Doritos got thousands of people to create unique commercials for them, visit their website to vote, and talk (hashtag, Facebook, blogs, etc) about it without paying a cent. Of course there is a  money prize for the winner but I think the fun is in seeing your own ad being aired during the almighty Superbowl with other millions of viewers.

I personally like the Time Machine. I thought it was too cute and the concept was really good. I laughed really hard at the end too (silly me). But my professor thinks thisr the Finger Cleaner will win this year and I have to agree. It’s kind of gross but has a good twist to it at the end that’s worth remembering. It’s definitely something to be talked about!
